Exeter Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) has been operational since July 2014. The facility uses up to 60,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste from households across Exeter, East Devon and Teignbridge to create valuable green energy.
Exeter ERF, a £45 million investment is a partnership between Devon County Council and Viridor who have appointed an operations and management contractor, Cyclerval to operate and maintain the plant until 2019.
The facility is the first of its kind in Devon producing 3.5MW electricity; enough to supply around 5,000 homes. Exeter ERF also has the potential to run an additional district heating scheme giving further benefit to the local economy.
Energy produced by the waste treatment process is used to operate the facility and the excess energy is fed into the national grid.
The facility also includes an education room to enable local schools to view the process and understand more about recycling and energy recovery.
