Early Career Opportunities

People are the lifeblood for any sector, but with the circular economy and low carbon goals of our industry, we look towards the best and the brightest to help drive our aspirations for our future development.

We see waste as a resource rather than rubbish. By transforming waste into high quality raw materials and renewable energy, we're making a big contribution to improving and promoting the UK's resource efficiency and bringing the world's resource to life.

Viridor has the UK's largest network of over 300 waste facilities, including 20 large scale recycling facilities and 12 Energy Recovery Facilities (ERFs) - four being under construction or in commissioning. Each year Viridor manages 7.6 million tonnes of recyclates and resources, and produces enough energy to power more than 380,000 homes.

We have big ambitions and to make them happen we need great people who are not only highly skilled but who can bring new ideas to the table, challenge existing processes and identify further opportunities, and dare to make big decisions. People like you. People who share our passion for caring about our environment and the world's resources, and who want to contribute to finding and delivering solutions. With our diversity of operations, we're able to offer a range of rewarding career pathways and opportunities for those at the start of their careers and embrace new technologies to help solve the challenges of today and the future.

Whether you join us on our Apprenticeship Programmes, our Graduate Management Trainee Programme or our Functional Specialist Programme (e.g. Engineering and Logistics), you'll be given real responsibility from day one and start to make a difference.

Graduate Programmes

Our two-year Graduate Programmes are designed to ensure that you continue your professional development with the benefit of ongoing support from teams and business functions that you work within and our Talent and Capability Team.

Each Programme starts with a week Training Zone at our Head Office in Taunton, Somerset, where you will start your Induction and learn about the diversity of our business. You will also benefit from 40 days of managerial, safety, behavioural and professional training, divided into Training Zones every three months where you will also get the opportunity to network with the other graduates in the business and visit some of our other operational facilities.

Whichever programme is right for you, you'll complete a variety of placements that will empower you to make a difference to live projects and become an expert in your field.

Graduate Management Trainee Scheme

If you join us on our Graduate Management Trainee Scheme, you'll benefit from rotational three-month placements across the business in your first year. You'll be placed at different sites across the UK and within different functions to allow you the best opportunity to learn about our business of recycling, landfill and power generation. During your second year, your placements will be designed to take into account your preferences and placements will be longer in duration as you prepare for your career with us.

Functional Specialist Programme

If you join us on our Functional Specialist Programme, you will be placed in your area of expertise, whether that is in Engineering, Logistics, Environment or Business and Commercial. You will be fully immersed in your specialism and start your career working in an active role and learning from your more experienced colleagues across your profession as you go, developing your skills and knowledge further. You'll also have the opportunity to get involved in our educational initiatives, helping to increase awareness of our sector in schools and promoting STEM careers.

How We Support You

During your two-year programme, you'll have access to a wide support network, including:

  • Your line manager, who has the experience in the specialism or business area that you have been placed
  • A 'Buddy', one of our previous Graduates who will help you settle in and answer any questions along the way. A mentor, who will support, advise and guide you as you continue your role and programme
  • A Learning and Development Manager, who is responsible for overseeing your performance and development

As your career aspirations develop, we'll help you to identify permanent roles within the business and where applicable, opportunities to gain further professional qualifications.

What We Look For

If you are applying for our Graduate Management Trainee Programme, you don't need a specific degree, we consider all. This is a Programme where you, your approach to situations, your aspirations and your personality will all be important. However, a passion for our industry and our business would be advantageous.

If you are applying for our Functional Specialist Programmes, we look for a relevant degree in that specific business area, whether it's in Engineering, Environment or Logistics for example. We also look at what project work or work experience that you may have undertaken during your studies. As you'll be an integral part of our teams, your attitude, aspirations and personality will be important too.

Regardless of the programme that you're joining us on, we encourage everyone to take a keen interest in the industry and environment. We are active in supporting our local communities, as such we look for examples of extracurricular activities whereby you have looked to make a difference and contribute.

Our Selection Process

We want to ensure that we bring the right people in to our business, after all, our people are our greatest resource. We also want to make sure that the Graduate Programme that you have chosen to apply to is also right for you, it's a two-way decision. Therefore, following your online application, you may be invited to record and submit a video interview, be invited to an assessment and interview. We encourage open communication throughout the process, therefore, our Recruitment Team will support you along the way should you need it.

One of the key ways that we can move our business forward is through the training of young people through apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to gain valuable work experience, qualifications and can lead to a great job. We offer a wide range of apprenticeship programmes at intermediate, advanced or high levels in different areas of our business. You can start your apprenticeship at any level or develop your career from one to the next.

Over 260 apprenticeships are currently registered across the company. All colleagues are offered a wide range of training and career progression opportunities throughout their career, including apprenticeships in other businesses.

We are currently working alongside EU Skills and other organisations in our industry and beyond to develop and deliver a series of trailblazer apprenticeships in waste management. For more information click here to watch a video from EU Skills.
