We strongly believe in helping all colleagues to reach their full potential and have structured training programmes to develop and nurture employees at all levels of the business.

As well as our range of employment benefits we offer fantastic training opportunities for our employees who wish to progress within the company. Last year we provided colleagues across the business with over 5000 training days and are continually looking to increase the number and the benefits of the training courses that we deliver.

Management Degree Programme

We have developed a pioneering industry leading management degree programme in partnership with Edge Hill University to give our future leaders the skills necessary to build on their existing knowledge and expertise.

The 'Viridor degree' programme was launched in 2012 and so far forty-six supervisors and managers have completed it. The latest round of students began their studies in April 2015 with further cohorts scheduled to start over the next twelve months.

The programme seeks to bridge the gap between technical expertise and managerial knowledge. We had identified that many of our managers had developed through the business into roles where they were leading teams of people, however whilst they may have fantastic skills for their job, they had little or no managerial qualifications.

Interest in the programme across the business is high. It presents a fantastic opportunity for current employees or anybody entering the business to aim high and develop their careers with a business that is keen to invest in its future leaders.

One of the key ways that we can move our business forward is through the training of young people through apprenticeships.

Apprenticeships are a fantastic way to gain valuable work experience, qualifications and can lead to a great job. We offer a wide range of apprenticeship programmes at intermediate, advanced or high levels in different areas of our business. You can start your apprenticeship at any level or develop your career from one to the next.

Over 260 apprenticeships are currently registered across the company. All colleagues are offered a wide range of training and career progression opportunities throughout their career, including apprenticeships in other businesses.

We are currently working alongside EU Skills and other organisations in our industry and beyond to develop and deliver a series of trailblazer apprenticeships in waste management. For more information click here to watch a video from EU Skills.

Graduate Management Training

Our graduate management training scheme aims to develop the next generation of managers and technical experts to support the changing nature of our business.

The two-stage development starts by providing a thorough understanding of our operations and services, framed within the wider context of the recycling and waste industry. This sees candidates participating in a rotating programme around core areas of the business.

The second year involves an extended, and possibly permanent, placement with clear, objectives backed up with regular reviews.

This programme is open to internal and external applicants with a degree or equivalent qualification.

Recruitment for the next phase of our graduate training scheme will begin in 2015 and will be advertised on our Careers site. If you would like to be notified when a new role becomes available, please visit our careers site to create a personalised profile and set a job alert.
